Interesting Wall Clock Decorating Ideas

Everyone knows that a wall clock is pretty simple; you just hang it on the wall wherever you want to be able to know the time. However it doesn’t have to be so plain and simple. There are a number of creative ways you can use clocks to create interesting and attractive designs in the home.

One of the simplest ways to make a wall clock interesting is to double it. Purchase two clocks in the same style, design, and color, and hang them in a straight line on your wall next to one another. If you want to get a little more creative you can hang them in a slanted line, or one above and the other below.

If two clocks aren’t enough, you can try three, or more. The more wall clocks you have, the more complex the designs that you can create. If the pieces are small enough, and the wall is big enough, you can get pretty artistic with your arrangements.

This trick is even better if you have multiple clocks in the same design, but in different colors. That way you are able to contrast and compliment the colors of the two timepieces, against one another and with the rest of the room.

Another variation on the multiple clock method involves hanging a clock in each room of the house, and making sure that all of the clocks have something in common, such as color, style, or some special design feature. This is a great way to tie together the theme of the entire home.

If you have a spare room that needs something to make it interesting, and give it a unique personality, why not consider creating a clock museum? You don’t need to do anything fancy, just purchase interesting clocks that you are drawn to every once in a while, and hang them in neat lines throughout the room. This is a great quirky way to add a little bit of interest to the space.

A wall clock may just hang on the wall, looking at you, simple, and unassuming, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be exciting, it can be interesting, it can be a source of conversation if you are only willing to use a little imagination when choosing how to display it.

Digital Clocks – Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

The term “digital clock” refers to a timepiece that displays the time digitally, using numeric symbols. This is distinct from analog clocks which tell time using hands pointed at numerals on the face. In general digital clocks are powered through electrical means, whereas analog clocks are powered by mechanical means.

The most common way for a digital clock to keep time is for it to use the 50 or 60 hertz oscillation of A.C. power. This can also be generated by a crystal oscillator, like the ones found in quartz clocks.

The most common way for digital clocks to display time around the world is in a twenty four hour army style format. However there are certain countries, most notably the United States, where a twelve hour system is used, displayed alongside an indication of whether it is currently AM or PM.

The face of the clock, displaying the time, is usually generated with a seven segment LCD, VFD, or LED. This is used to generate the four numbers, as well as other important symbols such as the colon between the hour and minutes, whether it is AM or PM, the date, and whether an alarm has been set.

One of the major drawbacks to digital clocks is that they are usually powered by electricity, and when the power is cut, such as during a power outage or whenever the device is moved, the time has to be re-programmed into it. This problem has been corrected in some clock devices which now use a battery backup system.

Another problem with digital clocks is that they are often difficult to set. This has led to the common image of a flashing 12:00 or 00:00 on the face of an unset clock. This problem is becoming less common however, now that we have so many devices which are connected to networks, such as the internet. These devices can use that connection to stay constantly updated with the time, including changes in daylight savings time.

Digital clocks are very small and inexpensive, and they are incorporated into a variety of devices such as televisions, VCR’s, cable boxes, cell phones, and computer displays. They are also often paired with an alarm of some sort, such as when installed in an oven or other time sensitive devices. Digital clocks are also often the standard in cars, although there is a current style trend where designers are moving back to having analog clocks in automobiles.

Kitchen Wall Clocks

Deciding on what clock would go best in your kitchen is a very personal decision. Everyone has their own sense of the ambiance that they want to create in this space. Some people prefer it to be a single minded room for functional cooking, while others would prefer that it be a center of family and friends, welcoming people in to congregate, converse, and help with the dishes. A clock, being such a prominent piece of home décor, is an important factor in the eventual ambiance of the space.

Most people prefer to use walls clocks in a kitchen. That is because this space is generally too crowded with functional accessories, and there is little or no room for a standing desk or table timepiece. The wall clock allows you to keep the time visible, and on hand, without taking away any of your work space.

There are a few basic material considerations that you should take into account when deciding on a clock for this space. First of all, the kitchen can get quite hot, what with the stoves running full blast, and the heaters, pots, pans, and other warming devices all contributing to the temperature. You don’t want to choose a clock that is made out of a material that could warp in such heat. That means that you should keep wooden and paper designs out of the space. Even if you have a plastic clock, make sure that the face is not made of some sort of cardboard insert, which may wilt during a hot summer cooking event.

You should also be aware that the kitchen is a source of a lot of splashes. You don’t want to put anything into this space which can be ruined by a pot of pasta sauce suddenly bubbling up. Some resistant wall clock materials include slate, stainless steal, certain plastics, and treated sandstone. Even if you have a clock made from one of these materials you should be careful to wipe off any spills or splats immediately, to protect the finish on the piece.

The style of clock you choose will be largely a matter of taste. You shouldn’t purchase anything which is too small, or is difficult to read, as you may need to be able to figure out the time at a quick glance. 12 inches in diameter or larger is a good size.

Some people will want to purchase a clock that has some sort of an alarm on it. While this is impractical in most wall clocks, some devices will have this option. Just be sure to hang them low enough so that you can easily turn the thing off.

Another alternative is to purchase a tiny alarm desk clock, and leave it on a windowsill, or in some other out of the way location. This timer clock can then be used to keep track of when you need to pull various dishes out of the stove.

Stylistically, you will want to purchase a clock which flows with the design you have throughout the room. If your kitchen is decorated with a warm rustic feel, then natural slate clocks, and certain whicker pieces, will flow naturally. If instead you have a futuristic stainless steal space, you may want to go with a more modern clock.

The clock that you choose for your kitchen will stand over the space, casting its own personality and ambiance across the room. You should try to find a piece which is functional and easy to use, and which flows naturally with your own vision for the space.

Laser Gun Novelty Alarm Clock

alarm clocks

I am not a fan of most of those annoying alarm clocks that make you wake up and perform an action, in order to turn the buzzer off. I just cant see myself paying to wake up at 5 AM and solve a puzzle, or catch a helicopter, or finish a math problem, while some machine makes loud obnoxious noises in my hear.

However when I am woken up at 5 AM by a loud annoying machine, one thing I do want to do, is kill! And that is what this clock allows me to do. Thats because when this clock goes off, the only way to silence it is with a well aimed shot from a laser rifle.

While this does sound good in theory, the biggest problem I can for see, is what happens if you lose the gun? Does the alarm clock buzz forever? Do you have to go out and buy a real gun to silence it?

Anyways we found this one at Coolest Gadgets

And it is available for purchase at Latest Buy

The Nautilus - An Insanely Intricate Timepiece

This is another insane wall clock found on Lisa Boyer’s site, and designed by Adrian Iredale. It features dozens of gears and pendulums, all hand carved, moving in exquisite precision around, against, and with one another, beating 90 times per minute in an elegant waltz of masterful design. The clock, which is a triumph of human creation, was designed with a gentle lilting chime, which is meant to be more of an afterthought, and less of an exclamation on each hour.

As always, the clocks found on Lisa Boyers site are not for sale, oh no you can’t just buy one. However, if you do fall in love, you are more than welcome to purchase the plans and struggle your way through the impossible complexity of building it yourself.

80’s Rubik’s Cube Desk Clock

This little novelty alarm clock is a throwback to a simpler time, a kinder time, a more peaceful time.

Well not really, its actually a throwback to the eighties. If you are nostalgic for the days of coke blowing wall street big cats, grungy street gangs battling it out over break dancing contests and the constant whine of heavy metal, than this clock is for you.

The design is simple and functional. All you have to do is spin the top of the Rubiks cute to alternate between time, date, and alarm clock functions.

Simplicity? WTF?

This clock is called simplicity, and the artist, Lisa Boyer, claims it only took her one day to make it.

I would like to open up her head and meet the team of geniuses that must be living in there, because when I look at this clock, I go cross eyed and I start to get a headache. How could anyone concieve, develop, and actually build something as complex as this in just a single day? An amazing triumph of human creativity

A Shield Wall Clock For Decorative Battlefield Needs

The designers of this clock claim that it resembles a viking shield. I’ve seen viking shields, and they didn’t have any of these funky colors, they were generally hardwood, unpainted, occasionally with steal straps or spikes. However this clock does have a shield like shape, with what I would call more of an African tribal type of design, or possibly some type of European Infantry piece. At 24″ in length, this would be a rather imposing piece of equipment on a battlefield.

This was found on Maverick creations and it is available in your choice of custom colors, all you have to do is contact the manufacturers and ask.

Wheel of Time - Modern Wooden Clock Design

This is another design from Maverick Creations, which combines the simple dignity of stained hardwood with a sleek and stylish modern design.

This clock kind of looks like a wagon wheel without the wheel part. I could see it being used in a country cabin, or some other rustic, lodge setting. It also kind of resembles a child’s rendition of the sun.

Digital T-Shirt Watch / Clock

This is a rather strange clock / watch / fashion statement. It is powered by 4 AAA batteries which are hidden in a compartment in the shirt, and the face of the clock is comprised of flashing LED numbers.

Rather impractical, apparently the batteries only last from 12-36 hours depending on which flashing mode they are placed on. Also, the batteries don’t work if you leave them in during washing.

Another problem with the shirt is that it is hand wash only, so you have to actually sit down and get nasty with the grime every time you wear it.

The T-Shirt is for sale at Latest Buy and they had this to say about it

“Up for a bit of mischief? Set the clock an hour ahead (or behind) and jump on a bus or train – then watch your fellow commuters work themselves into a lather as they try to figure out whether daylight savings has started. It also makes a great gift for those among us who suffer from terminal lateness.”

However there is a manufacturer of a similar, albeit less sophisticated clock at http://www.srkconsulting.com/hddclock.phtml
