Water Powered Clock

At first glance this cute little clock would appear to run completely on water power. All you have to do is set it up, pour some water in, and minutes later the time will appear in easy to read numerals across the surface of the piece. Magic, right? Why don’t they build a giant car shaped clock using this technology?

In actuality this is the same technology that was used to create those old potato clocks you used to make as a kid. Basically you have an Anode on one side of the piece, and a cathode on the other, and the water is used to pass electrons back and forth between them, generating electricity.

This is created by placing a piece of Zinc on one side of the clock, and a piece of copper on the other side. The water allows electrons to pass from the Zinc to the copper, and the result is a current flow through the water.

In essence the clock is one giant battery, slowly wearing away. When the zinc finally dissolves entirely, the clock will stop working, and you will have yourself fancy flower vase.
